Nansensgade

Nansensgade is the essence of the present trend "nordic cool", because of its unique relaxed atmosphere. People stop to discuss the world situation on a street corner, or enjoy the sun on a stone doorstep with a cold beer in their hand. While others pick up their children from school by bicycle.

As Financial Times recently wrote, it is as if ”the Copenhageners have a joint inner “feng shui calmness”. The inhabitants are "hip" in that very special way that could have come right out of an international trend book.

The street has moved in

In Nansensgade are no large international clothing chains or well-known brand stores. On the other hand, you’ll find small original designers, cosy cafés, local bike shops and great eateries that thrive shoulder to shoulder with art galleries and second-hand book shops.

And Nansensgade has moved inside the hotel, because the local designers and artists from Nansensgade have put their solid finger prints on the décor – with anything from key chains, pillows, tables to books in the book cases.
We Shop - Nansensgade

we shop

Design

After many working years Actor Wencke Barfoed and Production Manager Elizabeth Skytte set out to become masters of their own business and founded the design company we shop.

In some of the rooms at Ibsens you will find Wencke's small coffee tables and in the lobby are a number of newspaper and magazine holders. "Ibsen lobby would flow with colourful magazines, lots of newspapers and piles of old vinyl LPs. But with Wencke's beautiful magazine holders, we got order in the mess" Director Kirsten Brøchner says .

Piet Breinholm - The Last bag

Piet Breinholm

The Last Bag

During a band tour in the U.S. drummer Piet Breinholm walked around Manhattan with his old leather schoolbag. The bag received so many admiring glances and got so many compliments on the way that Piet got the idea of relaunching the old classic schoolbag.

Seven years have passed, and today the school bag - now with the more international name "The Last Bag" - is a fixture at the Danish Design Center and Louisiana. Recently he got his own shop in Nansensgade. At Ibsens Hotel we use keytags made by Piet.

Nansensgades Antikvariat Jess Jessen's Publishing

A book a day keeps reality away”. Behind this motto is Nansensgade second-hand bookshop and the second-hand bookseller, publisher and culture communicator Jess Jessen.

"Inside Ibsens’ – behind the doors in wrought iron and glass – in the small library corner hides a book case that Jess has helped us fill. Here you can hide and forget the world around you,” Kirsten Brøchner tells.

Textile Designer

Krestine Kjærholm specialty is carpets, which she weaves herself or get manufactured by Pure Carpet. "Garnish is not something you favor, when Kjærholm is your last name", she says. Her father was the famous furniture designer Poul Kjaerholm. She has created designs for Fritz Hansen (the reknown Danish furniture manufacturer) and worked with the industrial designers Knud Holch and Ole Palsby.

Several of Krestine's "teasing sticks" are now in the sofa corner in the lobby at Ibsens Hotel, with lots of pillows & poufs and one of her blankets beautifies the floor.

Jul. Møller & Søn, Nansesgade

Jul. Møller & Søn's Eftf.

cabinet maker

In the middle of Nansensgade, down the alley in no. 49, in the bottom, to the right and into the inner courtyard towards Søgaden, you’ll find a more than 100 year old joiner’s workshop, Jul. Møller & Søn’s eftf. For many years, the Royal Theatre has been one of their regular customers.

A couple of the workshop's robust tables have found their way to Ibsens’ new lobby. “We call it our Mingle-table. Sometimes company is nicer than dining alone when away on a business trip without family or colleagues. This is why we offer our guests Mingle-table", Director Kirsten Brøchner says.

Würtz Radio

Electronic equipment

Down at Würtz Radio we found the record player that can play all the old vinyl LP records. Many of us have put the record player and the vinyls in the attic or in the basement.

"I think we all – once in a while – dream of putting the pick-up on e.g. Zeppelin’s ”Stairway to Heaven”. Therefore we’d like to invite our guests and the Copenhageners to stop by with their favourite LP. Then we will be happy to serve latte or a cold draught beer and to offer a wing chair, a record player and a little nostalgia from the speaker"Director Kirsten Brøchner says.

No 40 Copenhagen

Vintage interior design

No 40 in Nansensgade is the result of a great passion for a raw and unique interior design style. The people behind No 40 find 99% of their merchandise in markets in Belgium and France.

We have found some original vintage French industry lamps that were previously used at the French factories - for the lounge and the library. "Not only are they beautiful, but it’s also recycling – which we like very much", Director Kirsten Brøchner says.

Sunny Asemota

Artist

The artist Sunny Asemota spent his youth years in the area around Nansensgade. Today, he has settled down in Nexø on the Danish island Bornholm, but he is a good friend of the hotel and a fantastic artist.

"When I paint, it’s first and foremost the colours that create the shape. I create my works as a result of my life experiences. To paint is for me a search for identity and harmony”, Sunny Asemota says.

Pia Hutters

Sculptor

Kirsten Brøchner tells that she coincidentally came across Pia Hutter's sculptures: "It all started at a parents' evening. There they were, the beautiful figurines – by the dozen and side by side – on the window sill in Pia’s kitchen".

It is great to see the figurines come alive in the new lobby at Ibsens Hotel. That is what a hotel is all about – people in movement and at rest. ..”, Pia Hutters says.

You can bring one back to your own window sills at prices in the range from 2-5000 DKK

One of the best hidden secrets in Denmark’s beautiful capital, Copenhagen is the area surrounding the lively street “Nansensgade” which the Danes prefer to keep to themselves. A village centrally located in the city - Nansensgade, which hides behind one of Copenhagen’s busiest pedestrian streets and the largest traffic centre, Nørreport. And still very close to the city’s power centre, parks, and sights.
