Dear Guest
In 1997, the Brøchner family took over Ibsens Hotel from ”3 ladies run a hotel”. Back then, you would find the bath in the hallway, plush wallpaper on the walls, and pictures of roaring stags in heavy golden frames. All this, we did something about back in the late 90ies. Now it’s time to do something again, because we think that the hotel needs a boost – a new look.

Nansensgade has got soul
We are so fond of Nansensgade – the street we are living in. We love its street life – the small cafés and restaurants, the galleries, the second-hand bookshops and all its other fun, peculiar and inventive characteristics. Here are no chain or brand stores. Here are small boutiques with new talents and fireballs, who with the sewing machine in the backroom serve the customers themselves. Here is room for differences, for tolerance, for the young, and for the old. Here the Danish traditions live side by side with the colorful expressions of distant lands. Here it is relaxing, nice and multifarious. And here you’ll find two significant historic opposites in each end of the street. Grevinde Danner stiftelse (Countess Danner Formation) & women’s liberation in one end and the Royal Vaisenhus School for orphaned children in the other end – and in between lives a folklore of a special kind. It is as if Nansensgade has its own soul.

This soul we would like to let in at Ibsens Hotel. We would like to welcome the city and become a greater part of Nansensgade and it’s wonderful life. And this is precisely what has been the theme for the new Ibsens Hotel that we will soon be welcoming.

Inspired by the quarter

We have wandered up and down the street, peaked into backyards and let the images and impressions sink in. We have asked some of the small workshops and boutiques, if they would like to be part of the new Ibsens Hotel and deliver an item or two. This has resulted in, among others, Krestine Kjærholm’s lovely textiles in our new lobby, in Wencke Barfoed’s (We Shop) small tables, in Taske-Piet’s (The last bag) leather tags for our new key chains, in Bookseller-Jes’s (Nansensgade Second-hand bookshop and publisher) books in our library corner, in an used record player from Würtz (Würtz Radio), which can play all of our old records. But we have also made a couple of great finds at the auction house Lauritz.com, simply because we think second-hand is great. So the hotel will be a mix of something new and something old – a little modern and a little vintage. A mirror of Nansensgade. (Read more about Nansensgade at Ibsens Hotel).

Open house
Our red neon sign ”HOTEL”, a true gem, will of course stay put. But we will open up the facade with large glass doors, small café tables on the pavement and with lovely awnings – and will welcome you into our new home with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine a late afternoon on your way home.

Torvehallerne nearby
In just a moment – this summer – the market halls “Torvehallerne” will open just around the corner, at Israels Plads. An oasis of fresh produce – with seasonal products and specialities from the small islands of Læsø, Lilleø, Samsø, Bornholm and many other places. And this has not passed by neither our noses nor our palets – so you can look forward to Ibsens'new breakfast ”Breakfast in a Glass”.

The rooms
Also the rooms are inspired by the street. We have created the interior décor with the idea of ‘nice and cosy’ in mind. We have arranged that our guests will be able to exchange books or magazines with each other. We have ensured that there is a great mattress, which comes with a lovely duvet and some soft pillows to cuddle up with. We have made a flat iron available – and because a wardrobe takes up a lot of space and is only rarely used – we have made sure that the suitcase will fit under the bed.

We are unspeakably excited to be welcoming you all to a new Ibsens Hotel!
